The final outcome depends on the complete qualification structure, subject content, practicum and NZQA assessment.
New Zealand Teaching Jobs for Pakistani Teachers
Pakistani teachers may have a suitable pathway where they hold qualifications such as:
- B.Ed
- M.Ed with an initial teaching qualification
- B.A. or B.Sc. plus B.Ed
- BS Education
- MA or MSc in a teaching subject plus B.Ed
- A recognised early childhood or special education qualification
The title of the qualification alone is not enough.

Can Teachers Qualify for Straight to Residence?
Primary, intermediate and secondary school teacher roles are currently included in the Green List Tier 1 Straight to Residence pathway, subject to the current role requirements.
Secondary school teachers moved to Straight to Residence in May 2024. Primary and intermediate teachers were added from March 2025.
A teacher may be able to apply from outside New Zealand if they:
- Have a qualifying Tier 1 teaching job or job offer
- Have an offer from an eligible accredited employer
- Meet the Teaching Council registration requirements
- Hold the required practising certificate

Straight to Residence is not automatic for every teacher.
Immigration New Zealand states that the teaching pathway is designed mainly for experienced teachers who hold qualifying employment and meet the required pay level. Newly qualified or early-career teachers may need to consider another work pathway.

Overseas Relocation Grant for Teachers
Eligible overseas-trained teachers may receive support towards relocation costs of up to NZD $10,000.
The Overseas Relocation Grant may contribute towards eligible expenses such as:
- Teaching Council registration
- Temporary accommodation
- Airfares
- Relocation costs
- Certain costs for immediate family members
The grant is not automatic.
Current requirements include:
- Being fully qualified before relocating
- Holding Teaching Council registration and certification
- Having an eligible full-time employment agreement of at least 12 months
- Working at an eligible state or state-integrated school

- Applying within three months of starting employment

Funding is capped and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
As of August 2026, overseas early childhood teachers are only eligible under the current arrangements until 30 September 2026. From 1 October 2026, overseas early childhood teachers will no longer qualify for this grant under the announced rules.

A Teaching IQA outcome that does not confirm full comparability does not always mean that every pathway has ended.
